Australian Dog

The Australian Terrier is a small and sturdy dog that was originally used for guarding, hunting, and farming. This adaptable dog has a sharp and lively look and can fit in well in different situations.

Physical Characteristics:

The Australian Terrier has a fluffy neck and a long hair on its head that make it look smart and alert. This terrier is a hard-working dog with a small and strong body that is longer than its height. It can handle tough weather and walk with ease.

The Australian Terrier’s fur, which can be blue and tan or red, is good for any climate. It has a long and rough outer coat and a soft and short inner coat.

Personality and Temperament:

This Aussie dog is very loyal, smart, and well-behaved. It gets along with other pets and dogs, but it is not very friendly with strangers. It likes to dig in the ground, as it is a natural hunter.

The Australian Terrier is not very noisy, but it is brave and energetic. It is always ready to chase and catch small animals.

Care:

The Australian Terrier is a good house dog that loves to be with its family. But it also needs to have fun and exercise every day. You can play with it, take it for a walk, or let it run free. The wire coat needs to be brushed every week and cleaned of old hairs twice a year. You can also cut the hair around the feet to make it look tidy.

This terrier can live in hot and cold weather, as it was made for the Australian climate. It can stay outside if it is not too cold or too hot.

Health:

The Australian Terrier can live for 12 to 14 years, but it may have some health issues. Some of them are Legg-Perthes disease, which affects the hip joint, cruciate ligament rupture, which affects the knee joint, and seizures, which affect the brain. It may also have some minor problems like patellar luxation, which makes the kneecap move out of place, and diabetes, which affects the blood sugar level.

History and Background:

The Australian Terrier is the smallest and the national terrier of Australia. The breed started in the late 1800s and was first shown as the “broken-coated terrier of blackish blue sheen”. Later, it was called Blue and Tan Terrier, the Toy, and the “Rough-Coated Terrier, Blue and Tan”. The dog usually had tan and blue colors, but some also had sandy or red colors. The dog became popular in British houses and shows.

The Australian Terrier came from many other breeds, such as the Yorkshire, Dandie Dinmont, Scottish, Skye, and Manchester Terriers. This made it a useful dog with a nice look.

The American Kennel Club accepted the Australian Terrier in 1965, almost 40 years after the breed came to the USA.
